The two sizes compared

  • Akku-Safe Rack M (item no. 200327): 1.00 × 0.80 × 0.40 m, 3 shelves, 180 kg per shelf, max. 360 kg. Rack 12.3 kg, cover 3.4 kg.
  • Akku-Safe Rack L (item no. 200328): 1.80 × 0.80 × 0.40 m, 5 shelves, 180 kg per shelf, max. 720 kg. Rack 20.8 kg, cover 8.0 kg.
  • Both have the same footprint: 0.80 × 0.40 m.
  • Dimensions and weights are subject to a ± 5% tolerance.

Materials and build

  • Protective cover made of HT glass fiber with a special polymer coating.
  • Metal rack.
  • Resistant up to 1,000 °C continuously (KIWA test, DIN SPEC 91489), up to 1,750 °C short-term (internal test report).
  • Non-combustible according to DIN EN 13501 (MPA).
  • After a battery fire, the protective cover is disposed of and replaced separately; the metal rack stays.

How much space do I need?

Both sizes have a footprint of 0.80 × 0.40 m. We recommend a clearance of at least 10 cm all around from walls and other objects, so you need about 1.00 × 0.60 m of floor space.

Why this keeps growing

A battery costs more than the rack

Not because the cells have gotten worse: there are simply more of them. And the more batteries sit at a single charging area, the more likely it is that one of them fails.

21.432t

Lithium-ion batteries placed on the market in Germany in 2024

Batteries pile up

Around 15 percent more than the year before. What used to run on a cord now runs on batteries: drills, saws, vacuums, fans, rescue tools, hand lamps, and they all end up at the same charging area in the evening.

German Environment Agency, “Altbatterien”, as of 2024

Fire tests commissioned by the German Insurance Association (GDV)

The first minutes count

A battery fire can be brought under control with water, but only if cooling starts early and covers a large area. The fire department, too, can only control such fires if it fights them effectively in the first few minutes.

GDV, fire tests by VdS Schadenverhütung

The day after

Downtime gets expensive

Property damage is one thing. Business interruption usually weighs more heavily: orders are on hold, the building is sealed off, machinery and tools have to be replaced. Meanwhile, the fire station is missing the equipment that was on the shelves.

This is exactly where the Akku-Safe Rack comes in: it does not stop a cell from going into thermal runaway. It keeps the fire where it started.

If it does happen

Six steps, and the fire stays in the rack

Each step with the test report that backs it up.

Charging

Small battery-powered devices and e-bike batteries sit on the shelves and charge, enclosed in the protected space. The rack is designed for storage and charging.

3 or 5 shelves, each rated for 180 kg

Thermal runaway

A cell fails and ignites. The cover made of HT glass fiber with a special polymer coating isolates the flames inside the rack.

Non-combustible according to DIN EN 13501 (MPA)

Smoke and toxic gases

The cover reduces the spread of smoke and toxic gases into the workshop, hall and fire station.

Smoke reduction: Magna Steyr test report

Pressure

If a cell fails abruptly, the fabric holds together: bursting strength and a static puncture force of 8.69 kN have been tested.

BS EN ISO 13938-2:2019 (Eurofins) · DIN EN ISO 12236:2006-11

Surroundings

The temperature outside the rack stays below the temperature inside. Up to 1,000 °C continuously, up to 1,750 °C short-term.

Then

The protective cover has absorbed the fire and is disposed of because it is contaminated with toxic gases. The metal rack stays: only the cover is replaced.

Setup & operation

Up and running in four steps

From choosing the location to charging in daily use.

  1. Pick a location

Firm, level ground in the charging or storage area. At least 10 cm of clearance all around from walls and other objects.

  2. Set up the rack

Metal rack with 3 shelves (M) or 5 shelves (L). Each shelf carries up to 180 kg.

  3. Load and charge batteries

Place small battery-powered devices and e-bike batteries on the shelves and plug them in. The rack is designed for storage and charging.

  4. Close the cover

The HT glass fiber protective cover encloses the rack and forms the protected space around the charging area.

After a battery fireThe protective cover is the wear part: it is disposed of because of contamination with toxic gases and replaced separately. The metal rack stays in service.

FAQs

What gets asked before procurement

Can I charge the batteries in the closed rack?

Yes. The Akku-Safe Rack is designed for storing and charging small battery-powered devices and e-bike batteries.

Does the rack extinguish a battery fire?

No, it contains it. The protective cover isolates the flames inside, reduces the spread of smoke and toxic gases, lowers the temperature outside the rack and limits explosions.

M or L: which size do I need?

M is 1.00 m high with 3 shelves (max. 360 kg), L is 1.80 m high with 5 shelves (max. 720 kg). Both have the same footprint: 0.80 × 0.40 m. M secures a single charging area, L holds the battery stock of a workshop or fire station.

How much space should I allow?

The footprint is 0.80 × 0.40 m. With the recommended 10 cm of clearance all around, you need about 1.00 × 0.60 m of floor space.

Can I keep using the rack after a battery fire?

The metal rack, yes. The protective cover absorbs the fire and is disposed of because of contamination with toxic gases: it can be replaced separately.

Which tests have been carried out?

Tests were carried out by KIWA (DIN SPEC 91489), the MPA (DIN EN 13501), the Fraunhofer Institute (based on VDMA 24994), Magna Steyr (battery module fire test and smoke reduction), Eurofins (bursting strength), the STFI (cut resistance and bend test) and Hochschule Hof (electrical resistance).

Can you purchase on account?

Yes, for municipalities, fire departments, emergency service units and businesses. You get a quote with line items and delivery time.

How long does delivery take?

Usually 5-10 working days. Because of its weight and dimensions, the rack ships by freight carrier.

Storing and charging lithium-ion batteries safely

Battery-powered tools are part of everyday life in every workshop, and in fire stations, hand lamps, fans and battery-powered rescue tools are permanently on maintenance charge. Charging usually happens where the work is done: on the workbench, on the shelf, next to materials and machines. This is exactly where the Vlitex Akku-Safe Rack comes in: it handles storage and charging and keeps a thermal runaway contained inside.

What the rack does in a fire

The protective cover is made of HT glass fiber with a special polymer coating and fits over a metal rack. If a battery ignites, the cover isolates the flames inside the rack, reduces the spread of smoke and toxic gases, lowers the temperature outside the rack and limits explosions. The fabric withstands up to 1,000 °C continuously (KIWA test according to DIN SPEC 91489) and up to 1,750 °C short-term. It is non-combustible according to DIN EN 13501 (MPA).

For trade businesses and fire departments

The Akku-Safe Rack comes in two sizes with an identical footprint of 0.80 × 0.40 m: M, 1.00 m high with 3 shelves, and L, 1.80 m high with 5 shelves. Each shelf carries up to 180 kg. This lets you secure a single charging area in the workshop as well as the entire battery stock of a business or fire station. Purchase on account is available for municipalities, fire departments and businesses.
