  1. It often starts on charge

According to the IFS fire cause analysis, lithium-ion batteries are the most common cause of electrical fires. Whether in a workshop, bike room or underground garage: the fire often starts when no one is nearby.

3of 4battery fires start during the charging phaseQuelle: IFS Report 1/2024, based on the fire damage cases investigated by the IFS
  2. Flames, smoke and toxic gases spread

A battery in thermal runaway releases flames, dense smoke and toxic gases, and the fire residues are toxic too. Without a cover, all of this immediately reaches nearby vehicles, the building and the crews.

  3. The energy stays in the pack

A blanket keeps the fire contained and lowers the surrounding temperature. It does not cool the battery itself: a thermal runaway in progress continues underneath. That is why the AGBF recommends cooling high-voltage batteries and monitoring them with a thermal imaging camera.

For trained crews

Covered in four steps

The PREMIUM is designed for quick, easy use in an emergency, by a team of two.

  1. Prepare

At the scene, take out the blanket and unroll it next to the burning object.

  2. Two-person grip

One crew member takes each side, using the four handles at the corners.

  3. Cover it

Pull the blanket over the object until it is fully covered. From 5 × 6 m, markings help you center it.

  4. Let it work

The blanket isolates the flames, holds back smoke and toxic gases and lowers the temperature. Fire residues are toxic: only work in protective equipment.

Active cooling under the blanketSnakE® Solid brings extinguishing water under the covered load: the heat-resistant V4A extinguishing system complements the PREMIUM in operations against lithium-ion fires.

FAQs

Questions asked before procurement

How does the fire containment blanket work?

Two trained crew members pull the blanket over the burning object. Under the blanket, the flames are isolated, smoke and toxic gases are reduced, the temperature drops and explosions are limited.

Which fires is the PREMIUM suitable for?

For damaged or burning (electric) vehicles and devices with lithium-ion batteries, from e-scooters, e-bikes, cars and forklifts to laptops and cordless tools. It can also be used on conventional vehicle fires.

Do I also need SnakE® Solid?

For EVs, we recommend it. The blanket contains the fire: flames, smoke and toxic gases stay underneath. It does not cool the battery. The Tesla rescue data sheet recommends direct underbody cooling with water for high-voltage batteries, and the AGBF recommends cooling the high-voltage battery. SnakE® Solid makes exactly that possible under the blanket. It is built for the underbody cooling of vehicles and is not intended for cordless tools, e-bikes or e-scooters.

How do the blanket and SnakE® Solid work together?

The blanket is pulled over the vehicle and encloses the fire. SnakE® Solid is slid under the vehicle at the same time or beforehand. Water on: the battery is actively cooled under the blanket, and the thermal imaging camera monitors the temperature from outside.

Is there a price for the combination?

You can put both items in the cart together, in which case the individual prices apply. With a quote, you get a 5% discount on the sum of the individual prices for the combination, with purchase on account on request.

What temperatures can the blanket withstand?

1,000 °C continuously (KIWA test according to DIN SPEC 91489), 1,750 °C short-term (internal test report). It passed the battery module fire test at Magna Steyr at over 1,300 °C.

Is the blanket reusable?

Depending on the fire load, it can be used several times. After a fire deployment, it is no longer considered compliant with DIN SPEC 91489. Fire residues are toxic: only remove the blanket wearing personal protective equipment.

Which size do I need?

Cordless tools and laptops: 1.5 × 1.5 m. E-scooters and hoverboards: 2.5 × 3 m. E-bikes and mesh boxes: 3 × 4 m. Cars: 5 × 6 m. Forklifts and larger vehicles: 6 × 8 m and up. We help you choose the right size: reply within 24 h.

Who may use the blanket?

It is designed for use by trained personnel: quick and easy, in a team of two. A briefing for your unit is available on request.

Can you purchase on account?

Yes, for municipalities, fire departments, emergency services units and businesses. You get a quote with line items and delivery time; with a volume discount on bulk orders.

How long does delivery take?

Usually 5-10 working days. Large sizes ship by freight carrier with tracking.

Fire containment blanket for EVs and lithium-ion batteries

Lithium-ion batteries are found in vehicles, tools and devices, and thermal runaway cannot be brought under control with water alone. The Vlitex PREMIUM fire containment blanket covers damaged or burning (electric) vehicles and devices. The blanket isolates the flames, reduces smoke and toxic gases, lowers the temperature and limits explosions.

DIN SPEC 91489: tested, not promised

The PREMIUM is certified to DIN SPEC 91489 (KIWA) and withstands 1,000 °C continuously and 1,750 °C short-term. The HT glass fiber fabric with a special polymer coating passed the battery module fire test at Magna Steyr at over 1,300 °C and is non-combustible according to DIN EN 13501 (MPA). Cut resistance, burst strength, bending behavior and electrical resistance were measured by STFI, Eurofins and Hochschule Hof.

One blanket, seven sizes

From 1.5 × 1.5 m for cordless tools and laptops through 2.5 × 3 m for e-scooters and 3 × 4 m for e-bikes to 8 × 10 m for large vehicles: you choose the area your object needs. Fire departments, municipalities and businesses can purchase on account. You will find the whole family, from the battery bag to the Car Service Set, in the Vlitex overview.
